Secondary Education
The Great Southern has had another very successful year competing in state competitions. The Science Teacher's Association of Western Australia (STAWA) run the statewide Science Talent Search Competition. Several schools in the Great Southern received commendations and Albany Senior High School student Natasha Vermeulen and Darren de Vos won first and third place in the Senior Investigations Category. Natasha also achieved the coveted STAWA Young Scientist Award for the second year in a row. Albany Senior High School was awarded the 'Secondary Science School of the Year'.
If you are looking for technical advice and your school technician is at a dead end - check for the latest guidelines and information from the Regional Technicians Group who will supply you with all the support you need.
If you are looking for tips on how to run a successful 'Gifted and Talented' program then contact Tracy Brothers who has been leading the highly successful and well reviewed Marine Science Research group at Albany Senior high School. Both Tracy Brothers (ASHS) and Dave Cooper (North Albany Senior High school) are very well versed in successful applications for grants and have managed to supplement teaching and learning provision beneficially in this way.
Make sure that you take advantage of the up to date resources from STAWA and SPICE. Science Assist is a website managed by ASTA which provides support, resources and up to date safety advice. Another great resource is the Australian Academy of Science who have several new programs such as 'Science by Doing' designed to increase engagement in science, 'NOVA: Science in the News' and 'Eureka Moments' which highlights fifty years of Australian science.
